Prosthetic Contact Lenses
For patients who require them, prosthetic contact lenses are made to offer therapeutic, aesthetic, and psychological advantages. People who need these lenses may have catastrophic traumas that have left their eyes disfigured or they may have congenital eye problems. Patients are given prosthetic contact lenses to cover up imperfections and enhance the appearance of their eyes. Special prosthetic lenses can be created to stop excessive light from reaching the back of the eye to reduce glare and boost comfort if specific structures of the wounded or deformed eye also fail to function normally. By ordering specially painted contact lenses or using a pre-made trial set, an eye doctor can match prosthetic contact lenses to the appearance of a healthy eye. Prosthetic contacts can be manufactured of gas-permeable or soft lens materials, just as ordinary contact lenses. The same multipurpose contact lens solutions suggested for conventional soft or gas-permeable lenses can also be used to clean and disinfect the majority of prosthetic lenses. Many different lens powers can be used to create custom prosthetic lenses to treat near-sightedness, farsightedness, and/or astigmatism or they can be produced without corrective power.
