People who have cataracts, or clouding of the eye's lens, can have their vision restored with a procedure called phacoemulsification. During this kind of cataract surgery, the lens is broken up into tiny fragments using ultrasonic waves, and the pieces are then removed from the eye using a vacuum. The injured lens is replaced with an artificial one to complete the surgery. The eye's lens is initially exposed during phacoemulsification from inside its surrounding capsule. A handheld ultrasound device's high-frequency sound waves then fragment the lens into an emulsified gelatinous substance. Ultimately, the mass is removed from the eye by suction and rinsed with sterile fluids (irrigation and aspiration). A complex tool known as a phaco machine is used to perform phacoemulsification. To precisely administer the ultrasonic energy, it is made up of a foot pedal, irrigation and aspiration system, handpiece, and several tips bent at varying angles.
